Remote Work Ending? Job Search Starting?

Recently, while listening to NPR in my car on the way to meet a friend for a walk on the beach, I learned that in a study conducted by Microsoft, they found that 41% of workers worldwide are considering quitting their jobs in the next 6 to 12 months. It seemed high to me, but when my friend and I chatted about how much we both love working remotely, I realized that "return to the office" mandates will undoubtedly drive some of these resignations.


My friend's position went remote as a result of the pandemic, and she'll most likely have to return to the office in the next month or so. I've been fortunate to work remotely for the same company for almost 6 years. While I do miss interacting with colleagues in the office, the flexibility I have now is something I could never give up. I can take my dog for a walk, teach a Zoom yoga class and then begin a career coaching session all without the hassle of changing or commuting.


While not the best ergonomic set up, I love the ability to work on my deck in the summer.

I know I'm extremely fortunate. Not everyone has a position that lends itself to remote work, but the pandemic has prompted people to examine what is important to them. Often seeking a better alignment between their careers and their values, employees are contemplating making a switch to a new employer or even a new occupation.


What's driving employees to leave their jobs?

  • Finding a new employer that will allow them to work remotely

  • Pursuing a long-held passion

  • Moving to a career with more meaning

  • Securing a higher level or higher paying job

  • Moving to a more stable industry

  • Leaving an unsupportive manager or toxic work environment

  • Working for an employer whose values align more with their own

Regardless of the motivating factors, The Great Resignation has started, and if you are planning to change employers, industries or occupations, it's important to first determine what is important to you, and this will help frame your search.


Components of a successful job search

  • Build your ideal job avatar

  • Conduct salary research

  • Identify your target job

  • List your relevant skills

  • Note and address any skills gaps

  • Optimize your LinkedIn profile and resume

  • Leverage multiple channels to identify opportunities

  • Practice your interview skills

  • Evaluate your job offers against your ideal job avatar

Of course, don't discount the possibility that you may be able negotiate a remote or hybrid work arrangement with your current employer. Have a conversation with your manager. You may be able to reach a reasonable agreement that works for both of you.
